Venice Lagoon Plastic Free js delighted to announce that the JOINABLE (JOINt approAch to Blue circuLar Economy – for Adriatic and Ionian Region ) project, is now part of the “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” Mission!
This EU initiative aligns with JOINABLE core commitment to tackling marine and freshwater pollution, promoting a sustainable blue economy, and enhancing environmental protection efforts across the Adriatic-Ionian region.
Objective of the Mission Charter
The Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 brings together organizations from various sectors to collaborate on achieving three key objectives:
- Protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.
- Preventing and eliminating pollution in our seas, rivers, and lakes.
- Advancing a sustainable blue economy that is carbon-neutral and circular.
As a transnational project co-funded by the Interreg IPA-Adrion Program, JOINABLE actively contributes to these goals by addressing marine litter and plastic pollution through comprehensive strategies, scalable solutions, and transnational cooperation. JOINABLE’s work supports the Mission’s objectives by integrating shared EU methodologies, engaging local communities, and spreading the use of cutting-edge digital tools developed under the Mission, for EMODnet compatible beach litter monitoring and gamified clean-up efforts in the Adriatic-Ionian sub-Mediterranean basin.
How JOINABLE Contributes
JOINABLE directly supports two of the Mission’s primary objectives:
- Objective 2: Prevent and eliminate pollution – Through targeted actions to reduce plastic waste in marine and freshwater ecosystems.
- Objective 3: Foster a sustainable blue economy – By promoting circular economic principles and sustainable business models in coastal and maritime sectors.
Moreover, JOINABLE enhances the two cross-cutting enablers of the Mission:
- Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System – By leveraging platforms such as EMODnet and the European Digital Twin Ocean, we ensure data-driven decision-making and knowledge-sharing.
- Public Mobilization and Engagement – We actively involve citizens in IPA countries, encouraging community-driven environmental actions and fostering a culture of sustainability.
Within JOINABLE project Venice Lagoon Plastic Free is coordinating the Work Pakage 2 “Bottom-up approach to blue circular economy” and plays a significate role in order to:
- Facilitate the establishment of a collaborative framework which will serve as a platform for cooperation and implementation of blue circular economy involving agencies, NGOs, local communities, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Promote transnational cooperation in monitoring and cleaning up marine and fresh waters litter.
- Contribute to the availability of comprehensive beach litter data in the Adrion region and local decision makers will have access to data through the EMODnet database, enabling them to make informed decisions.
- Build a citizen-driven feed-stock, meaning that citizens will actively participate in the blue circular economy.
By joining the Mission Charter, JOINABLE strengthens its role in the collective effort to restore and protect our ocean and waters. This collaboration not only increases JOINABLE visibility in the international sustainability landscape but also amplifies the impact of the Mission Ocean derived solutions at a larger territorial scale.
We invite all stakeholders—businesses, research institutions, policymakers, and local communities— to explore JOINABLE and the Mission Ocean & Waters initiative and contribute to a healthier, more resilient marine environment.
