Presenting the MAELSTROM Marine Litter App at the UN Oceans Conference 2022

A few weeks ago, we at Venice Lagoon Plastic Free were invited to participate in the international UN Oceans Conference, which took place in Portugal from 27 June to 01 July 2022. Alongside other consortium members of the H2020 project MAELSTROM, we introduced our dedicated marine litter monitoring app to a range of stakeholders, industry experts, researchers, and decision makers from around the world. The event was a marked success, and allowed us to share our innovative solution against plastic pollution on a global scale. Read on for more information on the conference.

The UN Oceans Conference 2022

Held in Lisbon during the final week of June 2022 and co-hosted by the governments of Kenya and Portugal, the UN Oceans Conference bore the official title “Scaling up Ocean Action Based on Science and Innovation for the Implementation of Goal 14: Stocktaking, Partnerships and Solutions”.

Promoting the idea of #OneSustainableOcean, the conference represented an opportunity for organisations and stakeholders from around the world to come together in the fight for sustainability in our oceans, sharing technologies, ideas, and innovations.

The MAELSTROM Marine Litter Monitoring App

Developed as part of the MAELSTROM Horizon 2020 project, our marine litter monitoring app allows users to identify the type, volume, and state of the macrolitter – primarily plastics – found within a 100m area. Already used for a variety of clean-up and monitoring sessions in Venice, the application – compliant with international standards – was presented to a range of organisations, local associations, volunteers, and stakeholders at the UN Oceans Conference. Here, we were able to showcase the MAELSTROM app’s features and functionalities.

The app generated a lot of interest among participants of the conference, and is intended for use by industry professionals and knowledgeable associations due to the scientific nature of the terminology used to identify the various plastic types.
