Venice Lagoon Plastic Free Joins the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”
Venice Lagoon Plastic Free (VLPF) proudly announces that our institutional activities aimed at Marine Litter Pollution Awareness, Monitoring, Removal, and Recycling have been officially accepted under the “Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters” Charter. This recognition highlights our organization’s pivotal role in advancing the Mission’s objectives in the Mediterranean Basin.

The EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” Charter is dedicated to safeguarding marine and freshwater ecosystems, combating pollution, and promoting a sustainable blue economy. VLPF’s initiative aligns closely with the mission’s objectives, which include:

  1. Protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030
  2. Prevent and eliminate pollution of our ocean, seas and waters, in line with the EU Action Plan Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil
  3. Make the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular, in line with the proposed European Climate Law and the holistic vision enshrined in the Sustainable Blue Economy Strategy.

With a target set for 2030, the EU Mission aims to leverage research, innovation, citizen engagement, and investments to ensure the health and vitality of our ocean and waters. By adopting a systemic approach and fostering regional cooperation through area-based “lighthouses,” the Mission seeks to address challenges at a basin scale.

As part of this initiative, VLPF’s action is showcased on the dedicated website for Mission Charter Actions. Our inclusion in this prestigious program underscores our commitment to catalyze resources and expertise for plastic pollution prevention and remediation measures within a sustainable circular economy approach.

EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme and a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. VLPF is also a member partner of two Mission Oceans-awarded projects: SeaClear2.0 and REMEDIES

Being recognized as a signatory of the European Mission Ocean Charter holds great significance for VLPF, and we are enthusiastic about sustaining our efforts with a set of VLPF-owned dedicated actions to marine conservation and a sustainable blue economy for Venice and its lagoon.
